Política, Religião e PC/Mac

 

Desde há muito que se tornou uma máxima dizer-se que, se não queres perder um amigo ou arrranjar chatice certa, evita entrar entrar em discussões sobre Política e Religião. São sempre como becos sem saída, em que a subjectividade impera e argumentos se contrapoêm a atropelam com respostas tipo “copo meio cheio / copo meio vazio”.

Actualmente, esta máxima deveria ser actualizada para Política, Religião e PC/Mac.

Se antes – quando dos Macs e iPods – o tema era já recorrente, agora com os iPhones e iPads também, mais se agravou.

Quanto a mim, sempre tive grande admiração pela Apple embora ainda ande pelo Windows 7 e um belo portátil  Asus bem rápido, que nada aquece (processador low energy), barato, baixo peso e quase 10 horas de autonomia / bateria.

Gostaria de adivinhar o futuro e poder antever como  será a Apple daqui a uns anos com o possível desaparecimento do Steve Jobs. Sei que se costuma dizer que o cemitério está cheio de pessoas que se julgavam insubstituíveis mas, neste caso, não sei mesmo.

Mas aqui fica o conselho:
Querem tempo perdido? Então entrem em discussões de Política, Religião ou PC/Mac…

10 Reasons PCs are Better than Macs

It's an age-old battle. There are PCs and there are Macs. Die-hard fans of each could spend hours listing the reasons why one is better than the other. Even the manufacturers have gotten involved, slamming the airwaves with commercials making fun of their rivals. As I sit here typing this article on my trusty PC I have just one thing to say: 
I still believe, to this day, that PCs are better than Macs. But why?

Affordability 
Let's face it. Macs are expensive and you're limited in your choices. Visit any Apple store or website and you'll see the same line of Mac products with the same prices. Start shopping for a PC and you'll see a wide variety of options from a countless number of manufacturers. You'll find PCs in a myriad of retail stores and they'll even - get this - go on sale from time to time. Last time I checked, the least costly MAC was still around $1,000. You can get a PC for almost half that. PCs are designed for real-world people on real-world budgets. Enough said. 

You're Not Paying for Design 
Going hand and hand with affordability is design. PCs aren't the prettiest on earth, though today's flat screen monitors and slim-line cases aren't exactly rough on the eye. Macs may be pretty but you're going to pay - a lot - for that slim and sleek design. Why is the Mac so much more expensive? It's the design. That's it. Newer PCs aren't that rough on the eye, so there's no reason to waste a ton of extra money on a Mac that only has half the operating capacity just because it's p-r-e-t-t-y. 

Windows Users Don't Pay for Frequent Upgrades
The Mac OSX system hit the market in 2001. Since then, Mac users have had the option to buy not one, but four new versions of the operating system. Considering they cost at least $200 at a time, the average Mac user probably spent an extra $800+ on upgrades. Windows released Windows XP in 2001 and there were only 2 upgrades (Windows Vista and Windows 7) in the next 9 years. Suffice to say, PC users don't have to pay nearly as much to remain up-to-date. 

Customization
It's much easier to customize a PC than it is a Mac. Mac users are stuck with whatever Apple offers. PC users can shop with a number of manufacturers, choosing extra RAM from one and a different video card from another. You can piece together a computer that fits within your budget - and won't have to worry about price fixing if you need to buy a new piece of hardware for an upgrade or repair. 

Gamers Love Windows
Are you a hard-core gamer? Gamers have found that PCs are more compatible with games than any other platform. While there are plenty of games for the Mac, the majority of games (at least the good ones) are developed specifically for PC/Windows users. You'll find a wider variety of incredible graphics cards (like AMD or NVIDIA) available for PCs and there are more games (of better quality) to choose from. Gaming systems like the Xbox and Wii have certainly surpassed PC game sales, but we're pretty sure the MAC will never catch up to either. 

Free Software Options 
FREE is good, right? There are dozens of incredible free software programs for PC (Windows) users - many of which are fully functional programs that could have been sold for a premium price. There are quite a number of software programs available for Mac users, but most are limited in their capabilities and you'd have to pay some sort of fee to upgrade to a "full" version. Maybe the Mac will catch up one day, but we doubt it. 

Software Compatibility 
Speaking of software, don't let anyone fool you into believing you have to have a Mac in order to edit videos or create great audio files. The software categories for Windows/PC users are much broader than those available for the Mac. You won't find yourself wishing you had an operating system that would support the type of program you want or need. 

Security Concerns 
PC users claim that Microsoft is far more advanced when it comes to security. Microsoft tends to regularly release security patches, keeping its operating systems safe and secure. Apple doesn't ignore security issues, but they certainly aren't as swift when it comes to making quick repairs. 

Technical Support 
Sit down in front of your television one evening and watch some of the commercials. There are tons of schools offering programs that teach about cheap computer repair for a PC that offer Microsoft certifications. How many programs have you heard of that teach about Mac repair? There aren't many. It's much easier to find a technician trained to repair a PC than it is a Mac - and it isn't likely to cost as much, either. This is incredibly important if you're not technically inclined and can't make your own repairs. 

Even Mac Acknowledges Windows
There's something to be said about the fact that Apple had to go out and create the Boot Camp program. What's Boot Camp, you ask? It's the nifty little creation that allows you to load Windows as a secondary operating system on your Mac. You'll have to pay for that copy of Windows, so why not just purchase a PC to begin with? Save yourself the aggravation. 

At the end of the day, the choice is really up to you. The reality, however, is that we live in a world geared towards PCs. Apple's marketing department will do its best to convince you otherwise, but we're pretty sure the PC will remain at the top of the computer world for years to come.

Affordability
É verdade, os Macs são mais caros. Mas também é verdade que os PCs não tem certos luxos que os Macs tem. A saber-se unibody, teclado retro iluminado, auto regulação da luz do ecran e teclado, Track Pads com gestos e tamanho generoso, leitores de CD sem gaveta, Sensores de IR para comando remoto, etc. Quando os PCs tem isto tudo custam tanto como um Mac. 

You are not paying for design
É verdade, os PCs são feios. 

Windows User Don't pay for frequent upgrades
Ora bem esta é completamente falsa, a apple cobra absolutamente nada por actualizações do sistema operativo da mesma versão. Tirando como é obvio quando é uma "Major Version", por exemplo como no caso do Windows XP para o Vista. Mas mesmo assim são muito mais baratas do que as da micrsoft. A recordar que da ultima vez que fiz upgrade do Leopard para o Snow Leopard paguei 50€ para cinco computadores. Quanto pagaria por uma actualização da Microsoft? 

Customization 
Falso, todos os meus macs eu já lhe mudei memória e disco que comprei nos sitios normais e não tinham que ter nenhuma caracteristisca especial para ser compativeis com os macs. 

Game lovers
Meia verdade. É certo que ainda não existem jogos na mesma quantidade do que existe para windows, mas já existem muitos jogos para Mac. E as placas gráficas da NVIDIA e AMD, podem ser instaladas no Mac. 

Free software options 
Bem ele diz um dia talvez o Mac venha a ter estas opções de software. Pode escrever ao autor do texto que esse dia já chegou. 

Software Compatibility 
Bem nesta aqui desafio a dizer qual é aplicação ou documento que não consegue abrir num Mac. 

Security Concerns
Bem esta é uma das principais razões que me levou a usar mac. O está se a tronar a coisa mais chata de usar por causa da segurança. Por exemplo, para descarregar o um executavel da net: 
Quer descarregar este ficheiro? 
Este ficheiro é executavel e pode ser perigoso, tem a certeza que quer descarregar? 
Onde quer guardar este ficheiro? 
Executar, abrir pasta, cancelar? 
Este ficheiro pode conter software malicioso, tem a certeza que quer executar? 
e depois entra a segurança do windows e a seguir entra a o anti-virus. 
Não há paciência. 
Techical Support 
Esta é de rir. Alguém me pode dizer qual é o numero de suporte da microsoft quando eu estiver com problemas? 

Even Mac Acknowledges Windows
Sim, esta foi uma das estratégias para chegar aos utilizadores do Windows, chamem-lhes burros.
Mas ainda assim ainda não me disse onde é que os Macs são limitados. Por favor diga-me o que é que eu não consigo fazer com o Mac.
